Symmetrical Femoral Neuropathy and Rhabdomyolysis Complicating Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

چکیده
Although carbon monoxide (CO) is a common cause of morbidity due to poisoning, peripheral neuropathy following CO poisoning has rarely been reported. Furthermore, rhabdomyolysis caused of CO poisoning is also uncommon. The report focuses on a patient with symmetrical femoral neuropathy and rhabdomyolysis associated with CO poisoning. A 32-year-old male was admitted to hospital in a deep coma following CO poisoning. On admission, rhabdomylosis was also identified (total creatinine phosphokinase, 19662 IU/L; CK-MB, 272 IU/L). After receiving hyperbaric oxygen, the patient regained consciousness; however, bilateral hip flexors and knee extensors were still weak in accordance to the manual muscle test. Lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed and did not reveal any abnormal lesions. Nerve conduction examination and electromyography results indicated symmetrical femoral neuropathy. After taking the rehabilitation program for peripheral and central nervous system lesions, the patient achieved functional improvement in ambulation, endurance and balance.(Chang Gung Med J 2006;29(4 Suppl):103-8)

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and non-irritating gas produced as a result of incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels and materials. CO can affect all tissue organs including the brain, heart, kidney, skeletal muscle, skin, peripheral nerve, etc. (1). The clinical presentation of CO poisoning are variable and nonspecific. It is well-known about CO intoxication of brain ...

BACKGROUND Carbon monoxide, albeit common, is rarely associated with renal failure. We report a case of CO-associated kidney failure requiring short-term dialysis. CASE REPORT A 33 year-old male was found unconscious in a bathroom equipped with a propane-gas heater. The duration of exposure to carbon monoxide was unknown. The patient was transported to a regional hyperbaric centre;the carboxy...
متن کاملAccidental carbon monoxide poisoning presenting without a history of exposure: A case report
INTRODUCTION Carbon monoxide poisoning is easy to diagnose when there is a history of exposure. When the exposure history is absent, or delayed, the diagnosis is more difficult and relies on recognising the importance of multi-system disease. We present a case of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. CASE PRESENTATION A middle-aged man, who lived alone in his mobile home was found by friends ...
متن کاملAcute Compartment Syndrome Which Causes Rhabdomyolysis by Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Sciatic Nerve Injury Associated with It: A Case Report
Rhabdomyolysis is most frequently caused by soft tissue injury with trauma to the extremities. Non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis may be caused by alcohol or drug abuse, infection, collagen disease, or intensive exercise, but incidence is low. In particular, rhabdomyolysis resulting from carbon monoxide poisoning is especially rare. If caught before death, carbon monoxide poisoning has been shown to ...

OBJECTIVE Acute carbon monoxide poisoning is a common problem that occurs during winter and leads to serious complications. METHODS We retrospectively studied 24 consecutive cases admitted with the aim of finding the causes and outcome of acute carbon monoxide poisoning. RESULTS The source of poisoning was charcoal in 71% of patients, motor gasoline in 21%, and other causes in 8%. Immediate...
